If you prefer to examine under a microscope, if you act based on logic, if you must see to believe.....
These are reasonalbe and logical responses from scientific mind persons. Let us explore Zen from these angles.
First, let us establish a premise - the definition of Zen. Our Master defines Zen as the "Universal Life Force and wisdom".
What does it mean in scientific term? It means that Zen is an "Intelligent Energy" governing the universe, so that there is harmony, order and growth.
All physical and energetic life forms are the manifestation of this Life Force of Zen. Because energy never dies, only transforms, this life force continues to exist.
Because life force is in the domain of energy, it just can not be described, comprehend, or mastered by our mind. It can only be experienced.
Through out 3,700 years of teaching, from Vedanta in 1,700BC to Buddism 500BC to Chan then Zen, the concept of this "Ultimate Spirit", or the "True Form Without Form" are always said to be "connected" to, or to be "transmitted", or to be "enlightened" with.
In scientific terms, it means if we can tune up our body, mind and spirit to be synchronized with this Life Force, we can decipher all of its messages and manifestations in real time, instead of figuring all the massive information with our brain of limited database.
Therefore for 2000 years, Zen is taught without words or formalities, because it needs to be "connected to" and not "thought through".
Now, how do we prove it?
We have listed, as many as we could find, scientific experiments related to this subject. None of it can prove outright the existence of this energy. Many provided a glimps to it.
Before you dive into them, however, you need to ask yourself what is enough information. Can science progress fast enough to explain the workings of this universe in our life time.
Since the life force has been around too long for our scientific instruments to catch up with. We can only have glimps of it through limited scientific approaches. It is not our goal to entangle anyone into science, while we honestly believe, through the practice of Zen, we can be in touch, in sync and witness the Wisdom of Zen in our life time. With this in mind, we wish you use science only as a bridge, and not as your bible.
Recently, there are many publications about Dark Matter and Dark Energy providing evidence to convince us that we have learned only about 5% of the universal workings through science.
Dr. Lee, pricipal of Taiwan University did a double blind test using children who can recognize words through sealed envelops. When they encountered words such as Buddha, Jesus or Alah, all they sense is lights and not the word itself.
