Chan Master Wu Jue Miao-Tian
Chan Master Wu Jue Miao-Tian, was named Ming-Liang Huang by his family. He was born in Pingtung, southern Taiwan. “Ming-Liang” in Chinese means “bright.” This name came from the auspicious phenomenon when the Chan Master was born—it was exceptionally bright inside the room, while the sun and moon were both shining brightly outside. He grew up during World War II and lost his mother at a young age. The sufferings and impermanence he experienced during his childhood inspired his pursuit of spiritual awakening and liberation.
The venerable Chan Master started his spiritual journey at age forty. After visiting and studying numerous religions, he became a disciple of the 84th Patriarch of The Order Of Chan. After practicing The Profound Buddha Heart Dharma for eight years, he attained enlightenment and received transmission from Buddha Due to his inner witness of The Buddha Heart, along with his inheritance of the Ling-Ji Order, he became the 85th Patriarch of The Order Of Chan (an orthodox lineage of Buddhist practice originally trasnmitted from Shakyamuni Buddha to MahaKasyapa.)
The venerable Chan Master witnesses that for the attainment of enlightenment within one lifetime, one must awaken first, must open one’s heart, must witness one’s self-nature, through the deep meditative state of Ding by practicing the formless dharma - the authentic lineage teachings of Chan, transmitted directly from Buddha’s heart to the heart of the practitioner.
The Chan Master graduated from the National Defense University and went to graduate school in the Political Science Department at the Chinese Culture University in Taiwan. He received his Ph.D. degree from the Institute of Philosophy at the Toyo University in Japan in 1993. In 1999, he was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Philosophy degree by the International Education College in New York.
In addition to promote Buddhist teachings, the Chan Master also advises key government officials of Taiwan with the intention to assist them in making better policies which would ultimately improve the economical growth, democratic prosperity, and social stability.
The venerable Chan Master understands that leadership skills and professional knowledge should not be the sole qualifications needed to lead a country or to administer a government. All government officials should possess compassion, just as all religious leaders, so that they could administer humanitarian programs and serve people with kindness as their main goal.
After the Chan Master attained enlightenment, he struggled in deciding the most effective way to promulgate the lineage Buddha’s authentic teaching -- whether being a monk or a secular Chan master. The Asian culture traditionally only recognizes monks, wearing robe with shaved heads, as the ordained representatives of Buddhist teachings. Though truly enlightened, to promulgate Buddha’s dharma, as a secular Chan master will be very difficult in Taiwan and other Asian communities.
In fact, these external “forms” are actually irrelevant to the teachings of Buddha. Shakyamuni Buddha had mentioned in the Diamond Sutra, “Detach from all forms, then is Buddha.” Therefore, after deep contemplation, the Chan Master determined to teach as a secular Chan master. Setting himself up as an example, he could then help all Buddhist practitioners to break the tradition, detach from all forms, surpass all habits, so that everyone could practice the authentic lineage teachings of Buddha.
In 1983, the venerable Chan Master started to teach the authentic lineage Buddha dharma. He founded the Chinese Heart Chan Educational Foundation in 1988 to teach Chan to purify people’s hearts. He established Heart Chan practicing groups all over Taiwan, including schools, governmental agencies, social groups, corporations and universities. He even assisted inmates in the Taipei Detention Center to giving up drugs through Chan meditation.
Then in 1999, the venerable Chan Master established the Taiwan Chan Buddhist Association, expanding his teaching beyond knowledge and education into the Buddhist community with authentic dharma and pure spiritual practices. Shakyamuni Buddha said, “If you wish to meet me with your physical self or inquire me through your voice, you will not be able to reach me, because these are the wrongful paths.” In order to correct the form-based practice of most Buddhists, the venerable Chan Master introduces the authentic lineage Buddha’s practice of “direct into one’s self-nature to attain enlightenment”. This is to let people realize that the true dharma is formless, is taught without words and is beyond religious rituals, which could enable everyone to attain Buddhahood.
In 2000, the Chan Master founded the World Leadership Education Foundation which offers young people professional trainings of leadership skills as well as the development of inner wisdom and inner potential enhancement through right meditation. . Its goal is to nurture future world leaders with true skills and compassion and dedicate themselves to engineer world peace and harmony.
On the twentieth year of his teaching, the venerable Chan Master suggested to establish Taiwan to become the Buddhist nation in the world. Chan Master indicated that Heart Chan is the authentic lineage teaching passed down directly from Shakyamuni Buddha. In order to transform this world into a nirvana, Taiwan needs to evolve itself into a Buddhist nation where most people practice the authentic lineage dharma. When Heart Chan is practiced through out the world, then the world will become a pureland.
Now in 2011 as the Chan Master’s teaching reaches its 28th year, he further proposed the establishment of “Buddha Nation on earth”. The Chan Master indicated that this “Buddha Nation on earth” was already established by Shakyamuni Buddha some 2,500 years ago. It was just ignored until now.
“Buddha Nation on earth” is a pure land filled with peaceful light from Shakyamuni Buddha. It is established for all sentient beings. Every practitioner of the authentic lineage of Buddha Heart Chan will be able to land at the pureland of Shakyamuni Buddha at the end of their life.
The Chan Master emphasized that everyone has Buddha nature within and therefore everyone could attain Buddhahood. Anyone could land at this pureland of peaceful light of Buddha nation on earth, as long as one practices the authentic lineage Buddha dharma, be transmitted with Buddha Heart, fby following the essential principal practices of Discipline, Ding, Wisdom, and Liberation.
